December 8, 2014 Speech to the Minister’s Conference concerning fighting poverty For the past 4 years I have aggressively been involved in a campaign organizing and advocating for the least, lost and left out. We live in a region that has a deep root of a racist system that no longer uses racial slurs, public beatings, and “no niggers allowed” signs that reflects the imperialistic view of the dominant culture. No, the 2014 racist culture is one that now hides within the walls of systematic structures, code languages, robes in courtrooms, managers in interviews and a gentrified program. For 3 years I held meetings in the basement of Pastor Martin’s church – Morning Star Baptist free of charge. We would have in attendance about 60 men and women who would come to find out what they needed to do to get a job. My speech to these disenfranchised citizens became the same each month – FIGHT –FIGHT –FIGHT! Our movement became so strong that Emmy Award winning documentary author Fran Murphy included our movement in her documentary concerning the 50th Anniversary of the “I Have A Dream Speech.” We also were included on a C-SPAN documentary entitled, “A Living Wage.” Through our efforts systems were changed, laws were modified and people got jobs. Through our efforts Lawsuits have been settled and racist companies had to change the way they did business. So far through our efforts over $3 million have been paid to men and women for discriminatory practices, and we expect to see much more. Our passion for this work is deep rooted within what I call, “The Blueprint of Urban Ministry.” This can be found in the Gospel according to Luke 4:18 - 19. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” The social issues that we are concerned about as preachers and leaders all fall under one umbrella – POVERTY. If we alleviate poverty, we would have: • better schools • better health • a better environment • low crime (people always want to talk about brothers killing brothers. They fail to understand that the problem of violence in our community is rooted within the racist plantation of poverty. Can someone tell me how many murders happen in Woodmore last year? NONE, because when poverty leaves a culture, society gets better.) So it has been our mission to advocate against poverty, fighting to change systems on a large scale, while changing people on a small one on one scale. We change systems by willing our power or perceived power. We have, through the grace of God, been able to have the riches of the world to sometimes fund our efforts to organize the people, which wills us power. We also have learned that craziness always gets a response… Finally we recognize that there are always tensions from within our community between the prophetic voice and the priestly voice. The priestly voice wants the prophetic voice to stop being so aggressive. The priestly voice wants to ask while the prophetic voice demands. The priestly voice wants positions while the prophetic voice wants change. We recognize that both are needed at the same time and welcome the support from the inside out of those that have a different methodology for change. In closing, I sit amongst the weak and the worst. I sit amongst the pain and the problems. I sit amongst the rejected and the high-risk and I hear the Lord asking – CAN THESE BONES LIVE?

Speech at Michael Brown Protest - October/2014

Hands Up! No Justice! -We stand tonight to demand justice for the death of Michael Brown. -We stand tonight to demand the arrest of Over-Seer Darren Wilson -We stand tonight to demand that a federal task force be created to take action against the de mili tization of neighborhood policing in America. -We stand tonight to demand that police officers wear video cameras on the person at all times. -We stand tonight to tell America its time to end institutional racism now. The death and the treatment of Michael Brown is not an isolated case in America. For the Black man, the treatment of Michael Brown, by police over-seers across these United States is the norm. For there is study that shows every 28 hours a black person is killed by the police. And so we stand tonight to tell tha racist officer in the big city and the small town - no more! No more to killing our children No more to beating our fathers No more to man handling our women We say No More! Now some say we are not patriotic because we are standing up to the police and America. I say to these mis-directed individuals that we support the officer who serves the people, but not the over-seer who stand over. We support the officers who protect us, but the over-seers who targets us just for being black. We support the officers who attempts to build relationships with us, but not the over-seers who sees us as animals that need to be locked up in a cage. Finally we say to America, you should be afraid. You have awakened your worst nightmare. You have awakened the hip generation. You have awakened the boys in the hood. And unless you repent from your sins, unless you remove the barriers of your systematic racial injustices you will fall a great fall. America you must change your ways. For the Bible says, " righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." You may have knocked us down, but you haven't knocked us out. We will keep marching. We will keep fighting. We will stay the course. And remember weeping may endure for a night but Joy will come in the morning light. No Justice!!!

The Church In Transition: Moving From Triage To Transformation - August/2013 - A Presentation at the Progressive National Baptist Convention

THE CHURCH IN TRANSITION: MOVING FROM TRIAGE TO TRANSFORMATION "You sure are something else" My social location >>>Diagnosis -The modern day black church member wants to hear a sermon on how to manage their stress and their stuff rather than to hear a sermon about suffering, stuggling, and sacrifice. And most growing churches have come to realize that the easiest way to grow the church membership is to preach to their personality and stay away from their lifestyle. Some churches no longer preach about holiness, and sanctification, but instead focus on a series of "how to" sermons (how to be single and satisfied....how to be christian in an unchristian culture, how to fake it until you make it). With these models of ministry in this modern time, it has left a void in the connection to the black struggle, righteous living, and sacrificial giving. The "Black" struggle is not relevant in many "successful" African American Churches. The traditional black church struggle of civil rights, advocating, fighting, organizing, and standing up for causes is not relevant to our communities and colleges. The only struggle our people see themselves connected to is the struggle to pay the mortgage and car note, which many can't afford. We are serving a people who have lost the connection, urgency, and zeal to fight for causes and issues. These members of our culture do not know that they still are called niggers by the imperialistic white man. Most members are aware of the issues, but not aware of how it affects them as a race of people (Amnesty Bill). We have members in our church who don't know the branches of government. We have members in our church that all they know is Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. We have members in our church who believes everything is ok, and they get very uncomfortable when you speak confrontational to the systems of the world. They are not connected and out of touch with what we know as the issues that the black church must continue to be advocating against (@ goundbreaking ceremony vp says just feed them and they will stand out there all day). So how do we transition them from triage to transformation? How do we renew their mind? The organizations that once relied on the black church are now sponsored and co-opted by mega million dollar companies who pays big money to get their name on the program and behind the podium. They in turn muzzles the message, and have replaced the financial support drives and human capital investment of the baptist preacher and membership. These organizations only come to pimp the black preacher and church for support with promises of positions, projects and a press conference without any care to have a theological centerpoint that keeps our community as close to a moral and ethical standard as possible. The fact that these organizations are speaking on behalf of us on same-sex marriage, amnesty for illiegal immigrants, and labor union relations, I see detrimental to the black church. One of the most suttle but maybe the most detrimental difference between the historic black community and the 2013 community is that the starting point has changed. The starting line if you will has changed for the 2013 African American vs. the Negro from the 70's. There was a time in the black community that everything started with God, the church and the pastor. Folk wouldn't purchase a house or a car until they talked to their pastor. Folk wouldn't get married until the pastor counseled them. Folks wouldn't accept jobs until they talked to the man of God. But the starting point has change in 2013. Now members believe that they are wiser than the man of God and want to keep him as far away from their business as possible. Check the record. There was no major movement in the history of Black America that God and the prophet was not the driving force to victory. Sadly to say, in 2013, our community has made God and the prophet an "after-thought" socially, and personally. The detriment in this change of the starting point is that there is no real moral compass or moral barometer that keeps us saying and doing the same thing as a community of baptized believers in Jesus Christ serving this present age. So in looking at the diagnosis let's look at the men, the women and the children. And we must understand that we live in a time where chaos is normal. We make the mistake of assuming that our folk got the sense of our parents. But the truth about the truth is we live in a time where the people we serve see chaos as normal. Baby momma drama, drug activity, mental health issues, bankruptcy, health issues, etc. is normal in the lives of many of our people. Generation X, (1960 - 1980) brought a whole new set of values to the Black Church. They bring their own perspectives to everything, even religion and theology. Their major question that they ask to everything is the question WHY? ( ) The most important value to Generation X is to create change against the dinosaurs of our culture. President Obama is a product and benefactor of this group and why his campaign message was so effective and resounding. His message said two catch words that resonated into their minds, and those words were "CHANGE and DIVERSITY." Two words that have historically been problematic for the black church. Generation X has no real sense of civil rights, and struggle but instead of challenging leaders they tend to idolize them, learn the system and replace them. An until we can at least understand where they are we never can help them to take up their bed and walk. Let's look at the -Black Man - there is an attack on the black man ( ) >returning citizen (sentencing issues) - prison culture/taking from family/come home to a gentrified community/not really employable >unemployed - the jobs that once belonged to us are now being given to the latino population for cheaper labor. (living wages bill need to be passed) (a labor is making the same now that he made 80's and 90's) >no voice - because of economics and mistakes the black man has lost his voice and leadership role. He feels weak and finds comfort in other forms of unhealthy lifestyles -Black Women - are tired, hurt, scarred and need relief >they have had to become the priest, provider, and protector of the family which is not their natural role. >some feel that they no longer need a man because all a man has ever done was hurt them >the white imperialist purposely puts the woman over the man to further destroy the psyche of the man and the black family. Children - >There is no longer right and wrong, black and white but there is now a gray area. >Its all about me! >Sexuality >Who do they see as leaders? Do you know there are children who has never seen a man wake up and go to work? Another part of the diagnosis of the black churches illness is the growth of what I call the Church Walmart Syndrome. One of the biggest negative influences that the local pastor and church is facing is competing with the mega-church. I define the Church Walmart Syndrome as when a "mega-church" builds within a 25 mile radius of the local church and sucks all of the local churches best leaders, members, musicians, community influence, and future leaders away because of the attractive life and look of the mega church. In turn, because of the size and financial stability of the mega church, they have become the model of the work of ministry and mission. Unfortunately, their model for ministry works for a suburban, non-confrontational, comfortable group of people who could be classified as members and not disciples. And part of the issue is we as preachers sometimes are trying to fit a suburban ministry into an inner-city ministry. It just doesn't fit. The Prescription 1. The message of the 2013 traditional black church is a message that is not adaptive for these times. The mandate of the church is to go and reach the people, not for the people to reach the church (Go ye therefore....) I am not saying that the message change, but I am saying that some of the methods should. The society of people are moving, but the church is not. We have to connect the generations by teaching, explaining and providing opportunities for them to spend time and benefit from one another. We have to teach the need for accountability and community involvement. We are serving a generation who is less accountable and less involved. For example, we have a high rate of single mothers of boys and young men in our churches. These same mothers may not be affected by unemployment, the "Ryan Zimmerman's" of the world, or racial profiling, etc. So our message of the plot to destroy the black man might need to be preached and geared to a church full of mothers who may not be as aware of the issues that there sons will face or are facing. We have to teach how the systems of the world operates against their boys with the hopes of them seeing the struggle and getting involved. 2. The same way we built relationships with the old folk, we must build relationships with these "crazy young people." My father thinks, at times, I am crazy, ungodly, unwise, and foolish. But because we have a relationship no matter how mad I get at him and no matter how mad he is of me we don't give up on each other. We may not understand each others ways, but we understand each others intentions. And we must build that relationship with the entire church. We also must push them to get married (man & woman) and have healthy families. There was a time when the whole family came to church, but when crack hit the scene it broke up the family, but we have an opportunity to place emphasis on the need for that structure. This might lead to the survival of a thriving church. But we need a family church (not a movie theatre church). 3. Another prescription for the church to consider is the concept of "team building." We have to teach them to be fisher's of men, not just to follow us. Jesus stated, "follow me and I will make you fisher's of men." We stop at the follow me part. Every disciple should be taught to make disciples. Far too long the leader is trying to do all the work, and I can hear Jethro saying, "there is a better way to do this." There are some members at the Holy Trinity United Baptist Church where I serve my father, that will call me before they call him with their issues, or for leadership and wisdom, but because my father has taught me loyalty, being trustworthy and has trained me on what to do we don't have too many problems. Part of the reason our best disciples leave is because they want to do a work that might be their concentration of ministry but not the concentration of the pastor's ministry. The flaw with discipleship as we know it is we disciple but don't deploy. If we don't challenge them with something to do they are going to leave. Folks are fat and unhealthy because they are eating the meal but not exercising. For example, prison ministry might not be a pastor's passion, but it may be a passion for a leader in the congregation. When that member/leader comes to the pastor with the idea or the question about prison ministry, it might be an opportunity to expand without the weight of the work. My passion is the "hood." So I do ministry in the hood (getting guys jobs, mentoring, speaking out to politicians, going to community meetings, fighting against drugs, schools etc.) under the umbrella of the Holy Trinity United Baptist Church, where I serve and it doesn't cost the church a dime nor does the Pastor incur added weight of ministry. And so when the lay leader has a heart for ministry we must put them to work, or we run the risk of them going to find work. This team should also ask the question why isn't something working and is there another attractive way to do this? We live in a time where we must attract their attention. What can we do to get the young adults to come to Bible Study? What can we do to get the youth more engaged? How do we incorporate emails, social media, technology, art, youth programs, etc. to be connected to the membership? We should ask what is important to them for the sustainability of their lifestyle and family? 4. Provide a place for men to be men. Real men like to hangout out with other real men. The church has not been a place other than for worship services, to allow men to just chill. Have discussion time with the men. Incorporate the young and the old. Allow for time where they can "let it out." Challenge them to do something. 5. The community is no longer listening to the Pastor for direction. How do we get them to hear. The weight of the world rest on the shoulders of the church. How do we get them to hear? It is my opinion that we have to raise up 1 voice from our leadership. They are listening to someone, but the problem is there are too many messages from too many black leaders. We need that one voice. Every generation through history had that one voice that sprung from the vines of the church. Nat Turner, J.H. Jackson, Gardner Taylor, Martin Luther King, Jr. all were voices of a specific time for the black church. Who is the voice today? Who is our leader. I have heard the argument that we will never have that again, and my answer is that may be why we are loosing ground. Everybody wants to follow and associate themselves with a strong leader. And with no disrespect to those who are trying to do a good work for our community, but I know without a shadow of a doubt that they aren't the voice because they didn't come from the black church which affords them the theological background to take uncomfortable stance on very popular issues and the strength to say, for God I live and for God I die. Every major city needs a general following the 5 star general. Every city should have a voice that is leading just as the national voice leads. Instead, we are so fragmented, and our people see it. We need the prophet to make that call to action. A convention was started and lives today because a prophet made the call. 6. We as preachers of the gospel need a continual hunger and thirst for God's righteousness. We need to develop and maintain a prayer life. The preacher must understand that relationship with God proceeds ministry. We must not rely on our gifts to move the people but must rely on God to move the people. The question that we all must ask ourselves is do we want to get a crowd or do we want to get disciples? At Holy Trinity we don't count the members, we weigh the members to see how much their worth is to the kingdom of God and the body of Christ. Young preachers need to know that unless you are willing to enter into and walk out onto a divine relationship with God then one is not ready for ministry. Jesus modeled this. On many occassions Jesus would still away to be with the Father. HE fasted and prayed 40 days and 40 nights. He told His disciples to get to the other side of the lake and he would meet them their after he spent time with God. He prayed at the Garden of Gethesemane. If JEsus needed time with God over and over again, surely the preacher needs to spend time. We truly need to be more than a servant with Jesus. We need a friendship. He needs to trust us with this work. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says we should transform our spirit into the likeness of His image. We have to be determined to look like Jesus. Instead of trying to model our ministry after Bishop this and that we should look like Jesus. God wants a friendship like Enoch, like Moses, like Peter, James and John. They knew God personally, and this only came from spending time with Him. My daddy taught me MUCH PRAYER - MUCH POWER, LITTLE PRAYER - LITTLE POWER. 7. We need the Holy Spirit to be upon us to: -Preach the gospel to the poor -send us to heal the brokenhearted -preach delivereance to the captives -recover sight to the blind -set liberty to them that are bruised If we took a poll and the house was a honest house you would say that none of these characteristics are truly the type of folk that you want or feel you need to join your church on a daily basis. If we are truthful, we really want givers and not takers to join the ministry, but the truth about the truth is most folk who join church are taking more than they are giving. but if we want a transformed ministry we have to work the work that God has placed in our hands. How dare we petition heaven for a better clientle? We are in the triage room. We are in the emergency room. Code RED! This work in monotonous. The Doctors in the Emergency room don't get much of a break. They don't get the nice stuff. They get the messy situations. They can't refuse anyone, and they have to give it their best everyday because lives are depending on them. And the reason the church is in the state that we are in could be because we are not taking the necessary steps with ministry and the people to get them healthy. Maybe we don't want to get too messy. In triage; the doctor has to do the following steps and prescribe future engagement: -examine the problem -assess the damage -treat the wound (stop the bleeding) -address the immediate danger -stabilize the patient -provide long term treatment -training and rehabilitation Pastors have become more managers than prophets. This puts the church at a great risk because we loose the authenticity of being lead by the Holy Spirit. There are a lot of uncomfortable members because we have uncomfortable leaders. When we don't follow the directions of the Holy Spirit, He will make us uncomfortable. The Holy Spirit must have room to lead and change the leaders direction. 8. A message to the Young Preachers. Young preachers don't spend enough quality time with their pastors to receive wisdom and tools to manuever through the pitfalls of ministry. As a matter of fact, they will even throw away the pastor that birthed them, and get mentored by someone else who is perceived to be the next hottest preacher out. The younger preacher must understand that you must be willing to run an errand before you run with the word. Too many preachers go out to pastor and lead a congregation without having a servant's heart or mind. Jesus might be calling you at this moment in ministry to just go get the jackass. He might be calling you at this time to go get the upper room prepared. We live in a time where everybody wants a title but but very little is getting done. Whatever happen to the time when everybody was brother or sister? We must decide whether we will be a servant, a priest, or king. The calling must be connected to Jesus first, and then he will connect us to the people. If we are connected to God then we will know what the people need and what approaches to take. Lean not unto your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him. Listen, the older guys are tired and truthfully want and expect more from us, but are afraid to put it in our hands because they don't trust us. We can preach, we can think, but we are too reckless. The old man doesn't want to gamble the ministry with us and take the risk of us loosing a life of sacrifice. I asked a old pastor who is pastoring a great ministry, why does he still wake up every morning and deal with this burden of pastoring? Why is he still preaching every Sunday? Why continue to struggle with this ministry? His answer pierced me to my core. He said, "Because I keep dreaming. I dream that one day the young preacher will seee what the old preacher sees. Y'all are too interested in stuff, but it's all about God. He continues, " one day the church will drive the community and will be the center of attraction and the preacher will be once respected again. We are not chicken eaten, money hungry, pimps. We are the mouthpiece of God. That's why I stay around, because I keep dreaming." Speech on the lawn of the Capitol - July 2014

July 30, 2014 Minimum Wage Speech We have come today to demand that America chooses >>the people over big business. >>to help rather than to hurt. >>to tell the lawmakers that they were voted in office by working people, and these same working people that voted them in office are requiring them Raise the Minimum Wage. >>We are just tired of living in a country that is not willing to address poverty A nation's character is defined by how she treats her poor. We hear continuous boast from the walls of the Capitol of how great America is. We hear from these walls, how America is the greatest country in the world. We hear from these walls that America is the seat of power throughout the world. Well we have come today to sound the alarm, and say that if America is as great as you say she is, than we ask you Mr. and Mrs. Law-maker to put the money where your mouth is. We ask you how can you be comfortable while headed to vacation while there are mothers without enough food for their children and fathers who are scrambling to pay bills. How can you be comfortable when there hard working American citizens who are suffering. How can you be comfortable when because of you, there are children without a chance at a good life. If we are as great as you say we are, put the money where your mouth is. I stand today to remind you that God s always on the side of the least, the lost and the left out. God is always watching to see how we handle the poor. For the Bible says, "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay them for {their} deed." We are here to tell you that we are going anywhere. We will continue to agitate. We will continue to march. We will continue to fight. We may be down but don't count us out. Truth crushed to the earth will rise again. And to every Easter Sunday, there was a Good Friday. Raise the Minimum Wage!

Speech at the Department of Justice - November 2014

Today I regrettably stand in front of the Justice Department to ask from this America the rights and liberties on which it was founded upon. Today I regrettably stand here in front of the Justice Department, to ask from this America what Dr. King, Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, and many more African Americans have asked. What we ask is that America treats the black man and woman as a United States citizen with all the rights that our Declaration of Independence profoundly reads, “That all men are created equal.” With that said we demand that the Justice Department stand with the millions of citizens across America who says: • No to police profiling people in our neighborhoods • No to military equipment in our communities • No to allowing Over-seer Darren Wilson and other police around the country to get away with murdering our young men. We demand that you stand with us and say Yes: • Yes to a nation-wide system to investigate police killings of black & brown people across America • Yes to investigating law enforcement and principalities of Ferguson and its engrained systematic racism within the municipalities of the town. America and the Department of Justice, know that the Ferguson District Attorney did not even try to get an indictment of Over-seer Wilson. He in fact, put the defenses witnesses on the stand to refute the witnesses of the state. Nowhere in the country do we have the District Attorney making the case for a defendant. We demand you to get off of the sidelines an get involved. Well many want us to go away. Many want the burning of businesses to cease. Many want the looting to stop. Many want the protest to stop. Well I come by to tell this government and the Department of Justice that you have the power to make us go away. You have the power to stop the protest. You have the power to stop the outrage. All that you have to do is stand with the people. Stand on the side of right. But if you choose to continue to stand on the sidelines and do nothing, we will continue to fight. We will continue to erupt like a fiery volcano. We will continue to be in your face. You must understand that truth crushed to the earth will rise again. God will not be marked! You may have knocked us down but we will keep getting up. For we know that our power is greater than yours and soon Justice will roll down like a stream. Soon justice will shine like the sun. Soon just will be won. No Justice No Peace!

The Preacher's DNA

The preacher has been created to be set up for failure and somehow is still able to give hope, resilience and an undying commitment to the unchanging hands of God. The preacher has to stand at the side of the death bed on Saturday and preach life to the dead on Sunday. The preacher has to accept broken promises from friends on Friday and preach about covenants of deliverance and love on Sunday. The preacher is broken in fragments of hurt, scars and bruises but yet stands every Sunday to preach about the healing and wholeness that every man, woman and child can receive. The preacher looks in the mirror and sees inadequacies of his past, his failures and his shortcomings but yet looks into the eyes of those who depend on his voice and life to be the carrier of God's vision leading to victory with the Master. The preacher sometimes wants to quit but then remembers that they aren't good at anything else and there are no other options in his life. He appears to be a failure to those of world, and truthfully, he sometimes see what they see. He has more losses than he has wins, but yet he can't quit. He couldn't live if he couldn't preach. Preaching is his therapy. Preaching rejuvenates him. Preaching is his life. Preaching is his passion. He can not retire. He can not stop preaching. He realizes that at his death; God lives. He realizes that when he is weak; God is strong. He realizes that when he is down; God stands up in him. IT'S A FIRE SHUT UP IN HIS BONES!!! This fire keeps him sane. This fire keeps him passionate. This fire makes him go when he doesn't want to go. It makes him stand when everyone else is sitting. No matter how long the days, how dark the nights, this fire forces the preacher to preach. It's a calling to fulfill and a God to glorify.

The Role of the Police

Where we get it wrong is the police was never created to protect and serve. There job is to maintain control and order of the people. That protect and serve is a ploy for support. They are overseers of the plantation. To make sure the slaves are in order and to make the rich richer. Did you know the swot team was created in response to the black panther party? The truth of this that black men, churches and organizations have to stand up and create community review boards and show no fear. And by all means keep your camera phones ready. When we see police having our youngins on the curb stop and video. We have to make them fear for their jobs. The only way to change one of these crackers is too threaten their income.

Officers/Overseers

Most police depts in America are hiring troops who have come home from war. Do you think theres a correlating relationship or its simply racism? If you look at the videos without sound you will find that the treatment of blacks in America by these officers looks the same way they were handling their wartime "so-called enemies." Every uniform should have a video camera built in the collar or the chest of the shirt. This will lower the amount of overseers beating and killing the slaves. I mean it will lower the amount of officers excessive force on African Americans. America is playing with fire. They are about to wake a sleeping giant. Remember, the so called major black cities of the 70's and 80's became that way after the King Riots.

The 3 J's of why Black America is still not free.

The 3 J's of why Black America still is not free are: 1. Jobs All across America the African American community is the last hired and the first fired. Racism is no longer carried out with lynchings and dog bites but now through economics. Gentrification has almost been completed in every major city that once was strong African American cities. Through an intentional plan black leaders and organizations have been co-opted, corrupted or been made a casualty of war and our cities have been turned over to the wealthy who main goal is build their profit share and wealth. 2. Jails Our Father's have been disconnected to family, community and respect. Drugs have been a major tool to attempt to destroy the power of the African American community. Men and women are now walking around with a modern day branding of the slave master called a federal record. With this record voting is a problem, finding a career and job is almost impossible. Housing becomes an issue. Credit to make major purchases are unthought of. And in most cases lifestyle adjustments are the essential need versus a cage for an animal. 3. Juvenile Education The education in black communities are failing our young people. We don't get the same quality and through gentrification schools have been turned over to a community that doesn't have the black child's needs as the most important issue in the school system. Our children are uninterested in the euro centric style of learning that has been an attempt to change and control the dormant kings and queens that are birthed in our community. And when they are not assimilating in the manner of the model the young people are labeled ADHD and emotionally dysfunctional. Until these issue are addressed by the power structure in America we can never be free....

Keep reaching for a higher level.

"A man's reach must exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?" We can't afford to be comfortable with the now ness of life. We must continue to press in an attempt to live better and so better. It is frustrating because we will never be perfect in this life but we can always strive for perfection.

No one seems to be content

Everyone wants to be somewhere other than where they are. The poor want a rich lifestyle, the rich want to have street "cred" (credentials). The old is trying to be young and the young is trying to be old. girls are trying to be boys and boys are trying to be girls. This world is upside down. Instead, the Bible teaches that in whatever state we are in we should be content.

Proud Daddy

Today my son, Xavier (Lil Zay) graduates from high school. I don't know what I was thinking bringing him home at 3 weeks old and deciding that he should live with his dad. I knew nothing about taking care of a baby, but when I looked into his eyes I never wanted him to leave me. It has been a rollercoaster ride trying to raise a man-child in the inner-city, in a particularly unconventional situation. The streets wanted him, but I refuse to let allow that. God can and will protect your child from dangers seen and unseen. My parenting has not always been the best and I have made many mistakes, but we made it this far and he is college bound with a full ride scholarship. To God be the glory!!! I am proud of him and acknowledge that the sky is the limit for his future. It is unreal to see his music talent and how the spirit of my mom (she was the diva) fell on me and now him. To all you single fathers who are legitimately doing your absolute best - keep pushing, it will pay off. Shout out to my support system - Lisa Gilbert (auntie-mom), Pops (grandaddy), Jeremy Underwood, & the Holy Trinity United Baptist Church family - we share in this success!

Interpreting the Bible

We must interpret the Bible from the stand point of being on the bottom not being on top. Our ministry must be a bridge for the least, lost, and left out. We must understand their hurts and pains and provide healing, and relief through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Our Power and Authority

The uniform gives the policeman the authority but the gun gives him the power.

Our authority comes through salvation but our power comes through the Holy Ghost.

Who Has The Preacher's Back

The people we help, in many instances, will break our heart because they will not reciprocate the love and appreciation for what we have done for them.  We give relentlessly and it seems that there is no return on our investment.  I know the spiritual mind says that our reward is in heaven, and that is true, but the emotional side of us still has an expectation from them.  Our business is transforming lives.  We attempt (through the Holy Spirit) to bring life to death.  It takes a toll on our body, mind, family, finances and reputation.  There is no remedy to this problem, it's just a reality.

The reality is that many preachers feel alone, and insecure because many don't take the time seriously wonder what the preacher needs and how they struggle just like everyone else.  When everyone expects you to have all the answers and to carry the whole load, it is inevitable to become stressed, frustrated and unhealthy.  Who has the preacher's back?

At approximately 1:27:00 into the following amazing documentary, “The House I Live In”, reflecting on the work of Raul Hilberg , Richard Lawrence Miller provides a summary of the step-by-step process of destruction as it relates toAmerica’s War on Drugs (relevant video segment follows the full documentary):

1. Identification – a group of people is identified as the cause of the problems in that society. People begin to perceive their fellow citizens as bad or evil. Their lives become worthless.

2. Ostracism - we learn how to hate these people, how to take their jobs away, how to make it harder for them to survive. People lose their place to live and are often forced into ghettos where they are physically isolated, separated from the rest of society.

3. Confiscation - people lose their rights, they lose civil liberties. The laws change so that it becomes easier for people to be searched and for their property to be confiscated, and once you start taking people’s property away, it makes it easier to start taking people away.

4. Concentration - the State begins to concentrate undesirables into facilities such as prisons and camps. People lose their rights. People can’t vote any more. They can’t have children any more. Often their labor is exploited in a systematic form.

5. Annihilation - this might be indirect, by withholding medical care, by withholding food, or by preventing further births. Or it may be direct, where death is inflicted, where people are deliberately killed.

Tell you problem, your situation and your mountain that you are with Him.  God is responsible for you and will make sure that His creations are taken care of responsibly and carefully. He said, "lo I will be with you always."

7 Steps to fight poverty

Ideas to end poverty:

1. Training for jobs that's coming not for jobs that are on their way out.
2. Teaching in schools that don't teach our kids to be good workers but inventors and thinkers that expose them to other lifestyles and technology.
3. Affordable housing that is not inflated
4. Healthy foods and restaurants at affordable cost
5. College college college
6. The talented ten come back to the neighborhoods they were brought up in.
7. Change laws that are geared to keep the poor poor

What 3 Things Did You Learn From 2013?

2013 has gone.  I made it another year.  Thank you Jesus! 2013 was a year of discovery for me.  I discovered that I had to let some people go in order to get to the next level.  The crazy thing is that as soon as I did, doors started to open and I begin to get opportunites I only dreamed of.  I also learned or was reminded that the race isn't given to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to those who endure to the end.  In 2013, I continuously fought/advocated/protested/etc. for the rights of the least, lost, and left-out.  To God be the glory things started to move on our behalf.  Although, we have a long way to go, it was good to see some victories.  Finally, I learned how to accept this path that God has me on.  I realize that if I just keep pushing, everything else will fall in place in time.

God is great! I am excited about the things that are getting ready to happen this year.
