Formula to respond to police murder

There is are multiple moves that need to be done: 1. Make sure that the justice department is involved 2. Create a list of demands that includes the investigation of this force, these officers and number complaints of harassment 3. Constant marches and protest that effects the commerce for a sustained amount of time 4. Voter registration to shift the paradigm in the next election 5. Lawsuit from the family 6. Engagement of all generations and all colors 7. Legislation created against these type of police stops that brings harsh punishment to officers and stations involved in this type if systematic racism. 8. A nation wide police brutality call center that folks can call and get immediate response when in these type of situations.

Statement on Charleston Church Shooting

I was asked to write a statement concerning the church shootin in Charleston, South Carolina. Here it is: It is with great sympathy and heartfelt love that our hearts go out for the victims, survivors and families of the Charleston, South Carolina church shooting. As people of faith, we stand understand, that the black church and pastor, historically, means a great deal to individual lives, the community and the shaping of American values. When the sanctity of coming together for prayer is threatened, due to the ever-present hand of racism, it’s time to come together with one voice that will not accept this behavior from any racist or bigot in our God-fearing society. In 1963, America experienced the bombings of 4 little black girls in Birmingham, Alabama. This America, never thought that she would be in grief over the same stupidity and insanity again. Just yesterday, the police was called and reports were given that shots were fired into a church in Memphis, Tennessee. The African American community is being attacked. We are being attacked from racist police officers, who have chosen that black lives don’t matter. We are being attacked from politicians, who choose to place more money in the budget for corrections than for education and job training. We are being attacked from judges that sentence the maximum sentences and see our community as less that human. We are being attacked from a system that teaches white America that everything Black is wrong and that we are no more than a detriment to the success of this great country.

Fighting Outside Of Your Corner

Just as the boxer must realize that the fight is in the middle of the ring, and he comes to his corner for rest, direction, exhortation, and to be worked on, the Christian Church must understand that the church is our corner but the fight happens outside the walls of the church.

Too many of us believe that if we serve in the church, come faithfully, and hold positions that we are doing our part. That thinking causes frustration, stagnation, and failure to be the salt of the earth which is one of the roles of church. This responsibility can not be left solely on the Pastors, but must become the atmosphere of the membership of the church. Evangelism is suffering in most churches because members have not decided that they will take their love for the Lord to their family, friends and co-workers.

Commencement Speech to 2015 High School Graduates

When I was called an asked to come as talk with you today my first reaction was, why me? You see, many look and see my work in the city (jobs, boys/men, speaking up to the powers of the city), you see the degrees and me teaching at the seminary. You see me preaching around the DMV. But what they don't see is I grew up on the southside in the 90's when D.C. was the Murder Capitol of the United States. What they don't know is that my 9th grade principal wouldn't give me my diploma until I turned in a 5 page paper of why I deserved to graduate from junior high school. What they don't see is how the only reason I made it through high school is because my principal, Mr. Ralph Neal refused to throw me away. They don't see that it took me longer that 4 or 5 years to get my Bachelor's degree. They don't see that all my homies are either in the grave or had to do hard time in prison. So I realize that the reason I was asked to talk to you is because when some of you see me you see some of yourself. Yea no matter how high I get, I will always be an OG from the southside. 41st and Georgetown! But as a Baptist preacher, I have been to too many funerals. And there is three things that I always take notice of when I look at the deceased program. The 3 things that I always notice is the birthdate, the dash and then the death date. What I want you to be concerned about is the dash between you birth and your death. What are you going to do with the dash? What are you going to do with this life you have been blessed with? What are you going to do with the opportunities that you have been given? Some of our fathers, uncles, mothers, brothers sisters and friends have decided to waste the dash of the life. But the question is what are you going to do with the dash? The first thing I want you to do with the dash is DON'T ALLOW YOUR ISSUES TO DEFINE WHO YOU ARE. You may live in a challenging situation but that is not who you are. You may live in a poor neighborhood but you can have a rich mindset. You may have been counted out, but that doesn't mean you won't make it. You are looking at someone who chose to go to UDC not because that was my first choice, but because my 12th grade high school counselor refused to sit down with me and help me get in college because she told me she wasn't going to waste her time on me. She said George you ain't nothing but a street boy. But I didn't allow her to define me. I didn't allow her to stop me. And So don't allow your issues to define who you are and where you are going. Secondly, when asking you what are you going to do with the dash, the 2nd point I want to drop into your ears is EMBRACE YOUR BLACKNESS When God created you, God didn't make a mistake. When your family sees you they see beauty. You come from royalty. You come from a people who made it through death and hell but they made it. You come from a people who stolen from their home, but they still made it. You come from a people who had dignity and pride. Young men pull up your pants. Young women cover up your breast. We are a people with dignity and pride. Walk in your greatness. Walk in your strength. Walk in your swag. We live in a country that says everything about the young black males and females of America is bad. They call you thugs. They fear you. They want you to assimilate into society and blend in. But I stand today to challenge some Anacostia graduate that you leave this graduation with the mindset of turning this upside down world right side up. You have the power to make a difference. You have the power to fix your neighborhoods. You have the power to change the course of somebodies life. Greatness is in your DNA. When you decide to be great no one can beat you. No one can beat you on the court or in congress. When you decide to be great, nobody can beat you on stage or in the senate. When you decide to be great, nobody can beat you at wimbledon or in the white house. When you decide to be great nobody can beat you on broadway or in the board room. Embrace your blackness. The last and final point I want to encourage you to do with the dash is to TAKE YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER WITH YOU EVERYWHERE YOU GO. You find out that there will come a time that momma won't be able to help you. There will be a time a your future that your homies won't be able to help you. There will be some test to come in your life that you will need to fall on your knees and ask for some help. There will be sometimes that you are going to find yourself in some situations that you don't know how to get out of. There will be some opportunities, some jobs, some positions that you want that you may not be qualified for. But let me tell you everybody sitting in this room today is sitting here only because of the grace of God. And you can make it. You can make it. You can make it. I got 3 reasons why I know you can make it. Number one is because he woke you up this morning. number 2 is because he woke you up this morning. Number 3 is because He woke you up this morning. And if woke up this morning, I don't care how bad your life was yesterday, today is another opportunity to make it. I want to leave you with this story. You are looking at someone who was didn't get a scholarship to go to graduate school to Howard University because my grades weren't up to standard in UDC undergraduate school. But I was determined to get my Master's Degree from Howard University, for that is the University my father graduated from. So with no money in my pocket, and no scholarship to attend I go and register. I go and stand in line, and while I'm in line the Dean of the Divinity School sees me, and ask me my name. I tell him George Gilbert. And he says, step out of line, and come with me. I follow him to his office and he says because I know your father, as long as you go to Howard you won't have to pay a dime for a class or a book. See little did I know that while I was on my way to the school to register, my father had already called up to the dean and made provisions for me to go. Well I'm here today to tell you Anacostia to go and take the heavenly fathers name with you, because your heavenly father has already made provisions for you. While you are trying to figure it out He has already worked it out. What are you going to do with the dash?

WE WOULD THINK AND CERTAINLY THOSE WHO LIVED THROUGH SLAVERY, AND WE WHO LIVED THROUGH JIM CROWISM HAD HOPED THAT RAGING RACISM WOULD BE A THING OF THE PAST. IT WAS A PART OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S DREAM. BUT HERE WE ARE IN THE 21ST CENTURY STILL DEALING WITH RACISM. JIM CROW MIGHT HAVE DIED, BUT WE ARE NOW DEALING WITH JAMES ESQUIRE CROW, JIM’S SON. I PRESCRIBE TO YOU THAT SAVING OUR BLACK BOYS IN AMERICA OUGHT TO BE OUR TOP PRIORITY. IT’S AN ISSUE THAT WE DON’T LIKE TO DISCUSS, BUT IT’S AN ISSUE WE MUST DISCUSS. AND WE DO UNDERSTAND THAT SATAN IS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE KILLING OF OUR BLACK BOYS. WE UNDERSTAND THAT AS A FACT. BUT WE MUST ALSO UNDER-STAND THAT THERE IS A SYSTEM AT WORK TO PROMOTE THE DEVIL’S SCHEME. AND WHAT HAPPENED TO TRAYVON IS NOTHING NEW. EVEN IN EXODUS CHAPTER 1, WHEN THE EGYPTIANS SAW THAT THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WERE FRUITFUL, AND HAD INCREASED ABUNDANTLY IN NUMBERS, AND GREW EXCEEDINGLY STRONG, AND THE LAND WAS FULL OF THEM. THE NEW KING CALLED A MEETING AND SAID, “BEHOLD, THE ISRALITES ARE TOO MANY AND TOO MIGHTY FOR US [AND THEY OUTNUMBER US BOTH IN PEOPLE AND IN STRENGTH]. HIS ATTEMPT WAS DESIGNED TO KILL THE CHILD THAT HE HEARD WAS BORN TO BE KING OF THE JEWS. AND SATAN THROUGH WHITE MALE POWERBROKERS ARE STILL KILLING OUR BLACK BOYS. AND THIS CONSPIRACY IS HAPPENING EVERYWHERE. OUR YOUNG BLACK MALES HAVE BECOME AN ENDANGERED SPECIES. AND WE NEED TO OPEN OUR EYES AND SEE THAT IT’S HAPPENING IN THE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, THE JUDICAL SYSTEM, OUR SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC SYSTEMS. IT HAPPENS AS OUR YOUNG SONS, BROTHERS, NEPHEWS, AND GRAND-SONS ENTER SCHOOLS; FOR IT IS IN SCHOOL THAT THEY COME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY CAN’T ACHIEVE. OUR YOUNG BLACK BOYS ARE TOLD THAT THEY TALK TOO MUCH, THAT THEY ARE TOO ACTIVE, AND THAT THEY ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS. TOO MANY OF THEM ARE PLACED IN SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS OR GIVEN DRUGS, SUCH AS RITALIN, UNDER THE DEGUISE OF TRYING TO KEEP THEM FOCUSED AND KEEP THEM ON TASK. THE TEACHERS DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM IN THE CLASSROOMS, SO IF THEY “TALK TOO MUCH”, THEY ARE SENT TO THE OFFICE AND TAGGED AS TROUBLE MAKERS. SO BY THE TIME MANY OF OUR BLACK BOYS LEAVE ELEMENT-ARY SCHOOL, THEY HAVE DROPPED OUT MENTALLY AND HAVE LOST THEIR SENSE OF PRIDE AND PURPOSE. AND WHEN WE READS THE STORY OF THE HEROD FAMILY, ONE WOULD THINK THAT THEY WERE REALLY MURDERERS. LET LOOK AT HEROD’S CRIME. HISTORIANS SHOW HEROD AS BEING GLOOMY AND CRANKY IN HIS LATER DAYS AND CAPABLE OF ALMOST ANY CRUELTY. HE WAS VERY WICKED. AND HE HAD COME FROM A FAMILY OF WICKEDNESS. HEROD AND JUDAS ARE NAMES THAT MAKE US SHUDDER, AND WE THINK OF THEIR OWNERS AS HALF-DEMONS. YET THE WICKEDNESS OF HEROD CONTINUES IS IN OUR OWN DAY. THE SLOW AND HIDEOUS MURDER OF YOUNG INNOCENT CHILDREN BY STARVATION AND NEGLECT, AND ILL-TREATMENT, FOR GAIN IS NO WORSE THAN WHAT HEROD DID. WE FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN OUR LAWMAKERS CUT SOCIAL PROGRAMS TO HELP THE POOR AMONG US, THAT IS CRIMINAL; THAT’S UNGODLY. THEY MAKE A LOT OF FUSS ABOUT ABORTION, BUT YET, THEY WILL KILL THEM AFTER THEY ARE BORN AND SAY NOTHING. NOT ALLOWING A CHILD TO BE ABLE TO GET AN AFFORDABLE EDUCATION IS WICKED. NOT ALLOWING A FATHER OR MOTHER TO MAKE “LIVING WAGES” IS WICKED. IF A FATHER OR MOTHER CAN’T AFFORD TO PUT FOOD ON THEIR TABLES, CLOTHES ON THEIR CHILDREN’S BACKS, AND A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS; YOU MIGHT AS WELL KILL THEM BEFORE THEY ARE BORN. THERE IS SIGNIFICANT WAYS IN WHICH ONE CAN KILL A YOUNG BLACK BOY. I LIKE THE MOVIE ENTITLED, THE SCENT OF WOMAN. IN THAT MOVIE, AL PACINO SPEAKS UP AT A PRESTIGEOUS PRACTICE SCHOOL. HIS FRIEND CHARLIE IS ACCUSED OF VIOLATING A SCHOOL PRINCIPLE AND THE SCHOOL MASTER WANTS TO TAKE CHARLIE’S SCHOLARSHIP AWAY FROM HIM AND SEND HIM HOME. AT THE SAME TIME HE WANTS TO PROTECT CHARLIE’S RICH FRIENDS. AL PACINO SAYS TO THE SCHOOL MASTER, YOU WANT TO KILL CHARLIE WHILE GEORGE JR. HIDES IN THE POCKETS OF BIG GEORGE. AL PACINO WENT ON TO SAY, YOU WANT TO SAVE GEORGE WHILE YOU KILL CHARLIE. AL PACINO BEING A RETIRED COLONEL STATED THAT HE HAD SERVED IN THE MARINES AND HE HAD WITNESSED YOUNG BOYS WHO HAD LOST THEIR LEGS AND THEIR ARMS IN COMBAT. BUT HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN AN AMBUTIATED SPIRIT. WELL, WHAT YOU MUST UNDER-STAND, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS, THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO KILL SOMEBODY. YOU CAN DO IT WITH WEAPONS; YOU CAN DO IT WITH WORDS; YOU CAN DO IT THROUGH WAR; YOU CAN DO IT THROUGH INSTILLING WORTHLESSNESS; YOU CAN DO IT THROUGH WELFAR; AND YOU CAN DO IT THROUGH A DEPLETED WORKFORCE. THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF WAYS THAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE THE SAME END. AND THE EASIEST WAY TO KILL SOMEONE IS TO TAKE AWAY THAT PERSON’S SPIRIT, IDENTITY, VISION, DREAMS, AND PURPOSE. PARENTS, MURDERS SUCH AS THESE TAKE PLACE USING PSYCHO-LOGICAL WEAPONS --- IT’S ANOTHER WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION. PSYCHOLOGICAL WEAPONS ARE BEING MANUFACTURED IN AMERICA AND ARE BEING USED TO DESTROY THE YOUNG BLACK BOYS WHO HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO LIVE. STEREO- TYPES, DISCRIMINATION, RACISM, PREDJUDICE, AND LOW EXPECTATIONS DEVASTATE BLACK MALES EVERY-WHERE --- PERHAPS MORE THAN GUNS AND DRUGS. HERE AT HOLY TRINITY I TRY TO ENCOURAGE OUR TEACHERS TO HANG IN THERE WITH THESE BOYS. I KNOW IT’S NOT EASY, BUT SOME-BODY HAS TO LOVE THEM, AND HELP THEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE. I MADE UP IN MY MIND A LONG TIME AGO, I CAN NOT GIVE UP ON MY CHILDREN. MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS, IT HURTS ME TO SEE OUR CHILDREN WALKING UP AND DOWN THE STREETS LIKE ZOMBIES. A ZOMBIE IS THE WALKING DEAD. A ZOMBIE IS SOMEONE WHO IS LOST, MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. ZOMBIES CAN’T THINK FOR THEMSELVES; THEY CAN’T ACT FOR THEMSELVES; THEY ARE EASILY MANIPULATED AND CONTROLLED BY THE PERSON WHO HAS MADE THEM A ZOMBIE. AND THIS DESTRUCTIVE PRACTICE IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN THE SAME WAY IT WAS CARRIED OUT IN ANCIENT PALESTINE, WHERE JESUS WAS BORN. THE SECOND THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS, THE CHILDREN’S FATE. AFTER HEARING FROM THE WISE MEN THAT A BABY WAS BORN WHO THE PROPHETS HAD SAID WOULD GROW UP AND BE KING OF THE JEWS, HEROD GOT ANGRY AND SAID, LET’S KILL THE BABY BOYS. WHAT A HIDE-OUS THING TO DO. AND WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS DESTRUCTION IS SOME-TIMES DONE SUBLIMINALLY OR COVERTLY. OUR SONS DO NOT SEE MANY POSITIVE IMAGES OF THEM-SELVES IN TEXTBOOKS AND ACADEMIC SETTINGS. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE OUR CHILDREN SPEND THIRTEEN YEARS IN SCHOOL FOR 180 DAYS A YEAR. HOW MANY HOURS DO THEY SPEND LEARNING ABOUT THEIR BLACK HERITAGE? HOW MANY HOURS DO THEY SPEND LEARNING ABOUT BLACK MALES WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL? THIRTEEN YEARS IS A LOT OF TIME TO EDUCATE OR AS CARTER G. WOODSON SAID, “TO MISEDUCATE.” THIRTEEN YEARS IS A LONG TIME TO INSTILL DREAMS OR TO STEAL DREAMS. THIRTEEN YEARS IS A LONG TIME TO ASSIST IN SOMEONE’S GROWTH OR TO ASSIST IN SOMEONE’S DEATH. WE ALL FROWN AND DESPISE “DRIVE-BY SHOOTINGS.” BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE SOME DISDAIN FOR “DRIVE-BY TEACHING.” DRIVE-BY TEACHING HAVE TO DO WITH TEACHERS WHO DRIVE INTO DEPRESSED NEIGHBORHOODS, SPEND VERY LITTLE TIME IN THE COMMUN-ITY WHERE THE CHILDREN THEY TEACH LIVE. THEY USUALLY KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF THE CHILDREN AND ARE IN A REAL SENSE STRANGERS TO WHOM THEY HAVE LITTLE ALLEGIANCE, LITTLE COMMITMENT, OR LITTLE SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY. DRIVE-BY TEACHING IS JUST AS DEADLY AS DRIVE-BY SHOOTING. WE MUST DEMAND THAT THE HISTORY BOOKS IN AMERICA REFLECT OUR STORY AND NOT JUST HIS STORY. WE ARE MORE IN AMERICAN HISTORY THAN SLAVES AND INDENTURED SERVANTS. WE NEED MORE THAN A SNAPSHOOT OF EGYPT IN OUR HISTORY BOOKS. AND WE MUST TEACH THEM THAT EGYPT IS NOT A COUNTRY WITHIN ITSELF, BUT EGYPT IS IN AFRICA. AND I APPEAL TO WOMEN TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE DEVIL WANTS TO DESTROY OUR YOUNG BOYS BECAUSE HE KNOWS IF YOU DESTROY THE SEED, YOU HAVE THE RACE AND YOU HAVE THE PEOPLE. WE CAN’T REPRODUCE WITHOUT THE SEED AND THAT SEED IS FOUND IN OUR SONS. IF OUR YOUNG BLACK BOYS ARE KILLED BEFORE THEY GROW OLD, THEN ULTIMATELY, THE EXISTENCE OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WILL CEASE. I BEG YOU TO LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NATIVE AMERI-CANS. THEY WERE KILLED. THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF INDIANS WERE KILLED AND NOW THEY ARE ALMOST NONE IN EXISTENCE. THEY ARE NO THREAT TO THE WHITE MAN. WE CAN’T ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN TO US. AND THEY WILL TELL YOU EVERY TIME, DON’T MAKE IT A RACE ISSUE. THAT’S WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE TRAYVON MARTIN MURDER --- DON’T MAKE IT A RACE ISSUE. BUT WAS PLAYED A LARGE FACTOR IN GEORGE ZIMMERMAN KILLING TRAYVON. RACE PLAYED A BIG PART IN THE JURY FINDING HIM NOT GUILTY. WELL, LET ME CLOSE THIS FEEBLE MESSAGE OF MINE. I WANT TO CLOSE BY TALKING ABOUT, THE DIVINE DESTINY. THE MURDER OF THE CHILDREN AT BETHLEHEM WAS FORESEEN BY GOD. IT ACCOMPLISHED AN ANCIENT PROPHECY. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT GOD ORDERED IT, BUT IT SHOWS THAT IT COULD NOT FRUSTRATE GOD’S PURPOSE --- A PURPOSE WHICH WERE LAID DOWN IN FULL KNOW-LEDGE OF HEROD’S WICKED ATTEMPT TO GET RID OF JEWISH BABY BOYS THAT MIGHT RISE UP TO BE KING. NOTHING CAN ULTIMATELY FRUST-RATE GOD’S GREAT DESIGNS. IF WHITES COULD HAVE HAD THEIR WAY, THERE IS NO WAY IN THE WORLD THAT WE WOULD HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT IN A WHITE HOUSE. AND I KNOW, EVERY TIME I SAY THAT, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF BLACKS WHO ARE QUICK TO SAY, BUT WHITES HAD TO VOTE FOR HIM IN ORDER FOR HIM TO GET INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. AND TO THAT I SAY, SURE YOU’RE RIGHT. IT WAS IN GOD’S PURPOSE. AND I’M SURE A LOT OF WHITES WAKE UP THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION SAYING, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN. AND A LOT OF WHITE WOMEN FOOLED THEIR WHITE HUSBANDS AND TOLD THEM THEY WOULD NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA, BUT WHEN THEY CLOSED THAT CURTAIN, THEY VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA. SO HEROD WAS DOOMED TO FAIL. HIS EFFORT TO DESTROY JESUS WAS USELESS. CHRIST CAME TO BE A CONQUEROR. AND HE WILL WIN THE VICTORY IN SPITE OF HIS ENEMIES AND FOES. THE FIRST HEROD WAS NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH HIM WHEN IT WAS ESSENTIAL TO GOD’S PLAN THAT HE SHOULD LIVE. AND THE SECOND HEROD WAS PERMITTED TO HAVE A HAND IN HIS DEATH, BUT ONLY WHEN HIS TIME HAD COME, AND WHEN THE DIVINE DESTINY WAS FULFILLED. The Importance of Riots In White America

Here is the purpose the riots: White America only responds to commerce and comfort. When you become a threat to their commerce and comfort change happens. There would never have been a Mayor Barry if there were no King Riots in the 60's. Dr. King said, "riots are the voices of the unheard." You may say it is ignorant but you must understand that this is just the lava from the explosion of the erupted volcano. Furthermore, it is the only way that white America is forced to deal with our issue. They would love to come out and say that a task force is formed to address our concerns, but this forces immediate response. I am not saying that I support tearing up businesses and communities, but I am saying that I understand why it is being done. God is always on the side of the weak and oppressed. I don't think there is only one way to Fight the power!
